Acupuncture and Cupping Therapy in Scottsdale, AZ
Personalized Acupuncture and Cupping Care With Dr. D.
What Is Acupuncture?
Acupuncture uses very thin, sterile, single-use needles placed at carefully selected points on the body. Research suggests it may help manage certain types of pain, including back and neck pain, osteoarthritis pain, tension headaches and migraines. Evidence varies by condition, and individual results differ.
Some patients also use acupuncture as a complementary approach for relaxation or stress-related symptoms. It should not replace appropriate medical or mental health care for anxiety, PTSD or other health conditions.
The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs includes acupuncture in its Whole Health system and reports potentially positive evidence for chronic pain, headaches, anxiety, and PTSD. Research involving Veterans has also reported meaningful improvements in pain and physical function.
Dr. Rambod Derakhshani, DC—known to his patients as “Dr. D.”—has incorporated acupuncture into patient care since 2011.
“I have seen acupuncture make a real difference for many patients, especially when pain, muscle tension, or stress has not responded well to other approaches. It is not the right fit for everyone, and individual results vary, but I know from years of clinical experience that it can be a valuable and effective part of care.”
Every treatment is personalized according to the patient’s symptoms, health history, comfort level, and goals.

How does Acupuncture work?
Traditional East Asian medicine describes acupuncture using the concepts of qi and pathways known as meridians. These concepts are part of acupuncture’s traditional framework and are not the same as anatomical structures recognized in modern medicine.
From a modern biomedical perspective, researchers are studying how acupuncture may affect nervous-system activity, connective tissue and the way the brain and spinal cord process pain. Although its mechanisms are not completely understood, research suggests acupuncture may be helpful for certain types of pain and other specific symptoms.
During treatment, Dr. D. selects acupuncture points based on the patient’s symptoms, health history, examination findings and comfort level. Very thin, sterile, single-use needles are gently placed at selected points. Acupuncture may be used independently or alongside other appropriate treatments as part of a personalized care plan. Individual responses and results vary.
Cupping Therapy
Cupping therapy uses specially designed cups to create controlled suction on the skin and superficial soft tissues. At The Healing Joint, cupping may be incorporated into a personalized treatment plan to help address muscle tightness, soreness and restricted movement.
Cupping may be considered for:
• Neck, back and shoulder muscle tension
• Soreness following physical activity
• Sports and repetitive-use discomfort
• Areas of persistent muscular tightness
• Restricted movement related to soft-tissue tension
Some patients experience temporary relief or improved ease of movement following cupping, but research remains limited and individual results vary. Cupping commonly leaves temporary circular marks that may last for several days.
Before treatment, Dr. D. considers the patient’s health history, medications, skin condition and treatment goals. Cupping may not be appropriate for everyone and is not performed over broken, infected or significantly irritated skin.
